Sometimes your dentist can’t be contacted, and one of those times is when a natural disaster strikes. Although this situation is rare, it’s still important to know what to do if it does happen. Oftentimes you won’t need to see your dentist, but there are times when visiting them is necessary. So, to help you know how to care for your smile if a disaster strikes, Dr. David J. Borgmeyer and Augustine Borgmeyer and our dental team have some tips for you.

If you experience a dental emergency, like a knocked-out tooth, cracked tooth, or torn gums, then you need to see a dental professional right away. It’s OK if your original dentist doesn’t treat you. Just find the dentist nearest you and get the problem solved. If you have severe facial trauma and pain, you can see a general physician for treatment.

If you have a dental crown or dental bridge that has come loose has fallen out of your mouth, you need to try to put it back into place with over-the-counter dental cement or sugar-free gum. If this isn’t possible, just keep the restoration in a safe place and avoid using the tooth/teeth that held the restoration in place. Make an appointment with your dentist as soon as things settle down.

If you are due for your dental cleaning and exam and you don’t have any pain or discomfort, don’t worry too much about attending your appointment right at the six-month mark. Although it’s important to get your smile cleaned and examined, your appointment can be delayed until the disaster has passed.
