When a patient has a cavity, Drs. David, Samuel, and Augustine Borgmeyer may recommend a dental filling in St. Louis, Missouri. Our office offers composite, or tooth-colored fillings, as well as amalgam (silver) fillings. Composite fillings can be made to match the shade of your natural teeth and are chemically bonded to your tooth. Composites often require less tooth preparation than amalgams. Amalgam fillings, also called silver fillings, are very durable, lasting at least 10 to 15 years. They are typically less expensive than composites.

When treating a cavity, our dentists will use a drill, air abrasion instrument, or laser to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. The area is examined to determine if all of the decay has been removed. The area will then be cleaned of bacteria and debris. Then the tooth is filled with the filling material, and our dentists will polish it. With tooth-colored fillings, more steps are required because the material is applied in layers and cured with a special light. When all the layers have been placed, excess material will be trimmed off, and the final restoration will be polished.
