Have you been experiencing any of the following symptoms?
- Severe toothache
- Prolonged tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Discoloration of a tooth
- Swelling and pain in the gums
- A persistent pimple on the gums
If so, Drs. David, Samuel, and Augustine Borgmeyer may recommend a root canal in St. Louis, Missouri. Be aware that symptoms are not always present when a root canal is needed. The dental pulp is the soft area in the center of a tooth where the veins, nerves, and connective tissues are located. If this area becomes diseased or infected, root canal therapy is needed.
Before performing root canal therapy, our dentists will take an X-ray of the tooth to examine the shape of the root canals and check for signs of infection in the bone surrounding the tooth. An access hole is drilled into the tooth through which the diseased matter is removed. This matter includes the pulp, bacteria, decayed nerve tissue, and any debris. Root canal files are used to clean the inside of the tooth and ensure all signs of infection are gone. The root canals are filled with a sealer paste and rubber compound, and the access hole is closed using a filling. In many cases, a crown is also needed to return the tooth to optimal shape and strength.
